Hot Topic: Meals in a Jar

Meals in a jar are all the rage. From a satisfying breakfast of overnight oats to homemade apple crisp — if you’re craving it, chances are there’s a way for you to serve it in a jar. These packaged meals are fun to make and offer a convenient solution for healthy eating on the go. They’re great for canning (a trend in itself with the rise of backyard gardens and farmers markets), no-bake desserts, layered dips, cocktails, even main courses. Here are a few of our favorite ways to get in on the trend, including tasty ideas for incorporating wheat germ for added flavor and nutrition.

Breakfast in a Jar:

Berry Good Muesli: Fresh berries, Greek yogurt and rolled oats create this heart-healthy, protein-packed breakfast in a jar. Add two tablespoons of toasted Kretschmer Wheat Germ for an infusion of B vitamins and other nutrients.

Breakfast Parfait: Homemade granola, fresh fruit and yogurt are a match made in heaven in this simple breakfast parfait. To add even more protein and fiber, add 1/2 cup of toasted wheat germ to the granola before baking.

Salads in a Jar:

Quinoa Salad in a Jar Four Ways: We love these four different spins on a quinoa salad, including a curried version as well as a Mediterranean option. Not only are these recipes complete meals filled with protein and heart-healthy carbohydrates, but all four versions happen to be naturally vegan and dairy free.

In a recent Recipe ReDux challenge that dared registered dietitians to “raise the bar on food in a jar,” our own advisor Liz Weiss offered tips for creating the perfect make-your-own salad in a jar.

Desserts in a Jar:

Layered Maple Oat ’n’ Apple Dessert Jars: This mouth-watering dessert doesn’t contain any refined sugar. Instead, it relies solely on pure maple syrup and ripe apples for natural sweetness. We suggest adding Kretschmer Honey Crunch Wheat Germ to the maple flax mixture before assembling for added nutrition and texture.

Strawberry Cheesecake in a Jar: By the looks of this layered dessert, you’d think it would be a diet disaster. Think twice — this cheesecake is vegan and uses all natural ingredients to sweeten the dish.
